Novation Circuit Groovebox – Great for Live Electronic Music?

Novation, the company behind various synths and controllers such as the MiniNova and the Launchkey, recently released the Circuit, their first groove box. Take a look:

It combines a Nova Heritage synth with a 4 part drum machine. So, although it looks considerably like their Launchpad controller, it is, in fact, a standalone music making machine.

Here is a video showing how you create beats on the Circuit:

And here is a video showing how you arrange patterns:

Here here is one that explains the synths part of the Circuit:

And finally, this one shows you how to use the mixer and effects:

I think the Circuit would be great for someone wanting to do live electronic music with a minimum amount of equipment. You can program things in advance, yet still play around with it live. The perfect combination really, don’t you think?

Anyway, what do you think of the Novation Circuit? Maybe you already make music and would consider adding this to your existing musical equipment. Or perhaps you are thinking of taking your first steps into the world of electronic music production, and you want one easy-to-use box that you can start making great sounds with straight away. Whatever your story, why not leave me a comment in the comments section below.

All the best,

P.S. Have you see the Novation Ultranova?

    Hi Marcus,

That sounds like an interesting device. I think I can make use of it when having a party at my house. This circuit groove box looks quite powerful and easy to use. Do you have any comparison with other similar devices, so I can also get some more ideas if it’ll be the right choice for me.

And where can I buy one?

      Hi Louis,

The product that immdiately springs to mind which is quite similar is the Korg Electribe Sampler. That is also a standalone box for creating music.

The best place to buy the Novation Circuit Groovebox is on Amazon, although please note that if you buy through that link I will receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

      All the best,

Is Amazon the cheapest place to buy this product from? I have been looking for a product like this for a while and I didn’t’ seem to find what I was looking for. I like how this product has a lot of positive reviews, that gives me a lot of confidence. Thank you for sharing.

Actually, it looks like you can get it cheaper on eBay.

This looks really cool! I’ve been looking for something that I could use for live backing loops that I can play guitar over top of.

Is there any reason you couldn’t use this like that – i.e. as an accompaniment and play another instrument over the top?

Also do you know if this has a recording function? Like if I wanted to record a sound live and loop it? Or if I wanted to pre-record a live sound and store it?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear to have an audio recording function, so you would not be able to record your guitar into it. But you would be able to use it as live backing for your guitar playing. Just keep in mind that the style of music is going to be more electronic, so if a mixture of electronic music with guitar is your thing, this would be great.

OMG, if this was around 20 years ago.. I used to generate electronic music through midi channels with an older computer back in the day. I had to program every detail into a song like fading and panning lol.

It’s insane how far technology came and how much easier it can make things. This allows more people to get creative. Amazing.

    Thanks for sharing.
