NEW: Yamaha Montage Synthesizer – Worth the Money?

So, Yamaha has just released a new synthesizer, the Montage:

As you can hear, it’s capable of producing some really crazy sounds. One thing that really caught my attention is the Super Knob. This enables you to control multiple parameters at the same time. You can also use it to morph between different sounds. it can even by controlled from a pedal, freeing up your hands to just play on the keyboard.

It seems like it would be really good for performing a lot of modern music live, especially dubstep. But it also has some great traditional sounds like piano and strings. So it seems to be a great all-round synth for live performance.

It comes in three different sizes:

  • 61-key,
  • 76-key,
  • 88-key.

The big problem for me at this point is the high price. Even the 61-key version costs £3,499, according to the Yamaha website at the time of writing this article. This clearly puts it out of the budget range of a lot of people, especially any budding home producers who are just starting out.

I can’t help but wonder whether similar sounds and effects could be achieved using a combination of software and MIDI controllers. Especially when you consider that the Yamaha Montage doesn’t have its own sequencer, so you would probably end up using it with a DAW anyway.

What do you think? Would you pay over $3,000 for a synth that doesn’t have its own sequencer?  Why not let me know in the comments section below.

All the best,

Hell Yea I would buy it! This thing is amazing. $3000+ isn’t that much for the flagship keyboard from the flagship company. Look at the Nords! omg way overpriced and everyone has a nord.

I suppose it comes down to what you can afford. Sure, if you have $3000 to spare, and this is exactly what you are looking for, why not! You are right that the Nords are expensive. The Nord Stage 2 HA88 has a list price of $4,799. I definitely don’t have that kind of money to spare!
