Free Online Beat Machine – Make a Drum Beat Right Now!

HTML 909 Drum MachineAre you looking for a free online beat machine? If so, I have got a bit of a treat for you today. I’m going to show to a fun drum machine that you can play around with straight in your web browser. Not only does it not cost you any money, you don’t even have to download and install anything. Just go to the website and start making beats.

But first:

Do You Remember the TR-909?

It was released way back in 1984 and was the first drum machine to be equipped with MIDI. It had a 16-step sequencer capable of storing entire songs. This made it great for making dance music with, especially considering the drum sounds had a more synthetic sound rather than the realistic sounds of some other drum machines.

Here is a demonstration of the TR-909 in action:

As you can hear, it’s perfect for making techno or house beats.

Introducing the HTML-909

Now we have a free online software version of the TR-909 called the HTML-909. As you can see, it contains most of the same controls as the TR-909 in software form:

To have a play with it yourself, go to:

You can get started straight away. All you do is click play, then select which particular drum sound you want to program and then start clicking some of the 16 steps to build up a beat.

My Experience of Using the HTML-909

I find that I can spend quite a lot of time playing around with the HTML-909, trying out different patterns and adjusting the sounds. It can get quite addictive actually, and I find I can almost get lost in it as it’s quite hypnotic. I can definitely understand the appeal of playing around with a machine like this.

The only fault I could find with it is that if I switch to another browser window or tab, it malfunctions and doesn’t play the rhythm properly. Apart from that, it’s great fun to play around with.

What’s the Best Use of the HTML-909?

You could use this to jam along to. If you are part of a band that doesn’t have a drummer, you could program in a drum beat on this thing and play along to it. Alternatively, you could record this and then use what you have recorded as loops in your music. However, if you were going to do that, it would mean you would already have some kind of music software, which you would probably be able to make more sophisticated drum beats with anyway.

Do You Also Remember the TR-808?

There’s an online version of that too!

Have a play with it yourself at:

The only problem I found was that when playing around with the settings, such as the pitch of individual drum sounds, the sequencer would tend to slow down.

Here’s Another Free Drum Machine

hydrogen drum machine

If you are looking for a drum machine that can do a lot more than the 909, how about Hydrogen? Although it’s not a simple online drum machine like the 909 is, you can do a lot more with it. It covers all different styles of music, the drum sounds are far more realistic, and you can program in more complex patterns with it.

This is awesome! As a vocalist and songwriter It can be a little difficult to get my rhythmic point across in a demo or scratch track without having a basic feel or beat – this is great!

The 909 is nice and simple which I like, I’ve checked out Hydrogen as recommended too, but it looks a little more in depth than I’m really committed to ha.
