If you are a fan of uplifting, emotional music, have a listen to this:
This is an ambient/downtempo mix of songs by Above & Beyond. In case you don’t know who they are, they are an English progressive trance group that formed in 2000. Their music is usually pretty banging and dancey, but full of beautiful melodies, chords and atmospheric textures; so it’s a real treat to have a mix of more laid-back versions of their songs.
I suppose my only criticism of this particular mix is that some of the transitions between the songs don’t sound quite right to me. Because the songs are in different keys to each other, trying to go smoothly from one to the other kind of spoils it slightly. But I’m saying this as someone who hasn’t done much of that kind of mixing myself, so I can only imagine how difficult it is to get it exactly right.
I think there are only really two ways to get a mix like that quite right. One would be to rearrange the order of the songs in a way that makes them fit together better. Another would be to use sound editing software to change the key of some of the pieces of music. However, the downside to that would be that they would either be slower or faster or would be pitch-shifted, which could significantly alter how they sound. It wouldn’t really matter on instrumental songs, but it would change the vocals.
What do you think? Do you hear the awkward transitions between some of the songs? Or does it not bother you? Why not let me know in the comments section below.
All the best,
